White Sleeves vs. Color Sleeves: Choosing the Right Base for Printed Cosmetic Tubes
When developing cosmetic tube packaging, choosing the right base color is an important part of the design process. It affects how printed artwork appears, how brand colors are presented, and the overall look of the finished packaging.
The sleeve is the cylindrical plastic body of a cosmetic tube. It is formed during extrusion and cut to the required length before printing and other decorative finishes are applied. Once these processes are complete, the sleeve is assembled with the tube head.
Plastic cosmetic tubes come in two options: white sleeves and color sleeves. Understanding the differences between them can help you select the most suitable option for your brand and packaging requirements.
White Sleeves
White sleeves are the industry-standard base material. The desired background color, text, and other design elements are printed onto the white surface.
Key Advantages
Excellent base for color printing: A white base gives printed inks a neutral surface to sit on. Colors printed over white typically appear clearer and more vivid.
Cost efficiency: White sleeves are generally less expensive than color sleeves because white is the most common stock material, and it does not require an extra pre-coloring step.
Considerations
Printed overlap line: When a colored background is printed onto a white sleeve, the color printed may overlap at the point where the print begins and ends around the tube. This can create a thin, slightly darker line running along one side of the tube.
Visible white marks: Depending on the printing method and surface finish, small scratches or surface imperfections may become visible as white marks. These can be particularly noticeable on darker or matte-finish designs.
White areas at the tail: During tail sealing, the sleeve is compressed to close the tube. On white sleeves with printed designs, this compression may expose white edges along the sealed tail.
Color Sleeves
A color sleeve is a tube body that is pre-colored during manufacturing. Color pigments are mixed into the plastic itself, so the tube is extruded in its finished base shade, and any additional design elements are printed on top of it.
Key Advantages
Consistent base color: Because the color is incorporated into the plastic, the background color stays consistent throughout the tube body.
No white edge at the tail: Since the material is colored throughout, the tail crimp or seal keeps a uniform color and does not reveal white edges.
Wide range of base effects: Color sleeves can support different visual effects depending on the material and manufacturing process. Options may include solid opaque colors, translucent, transparent, metallic, or pearlescent finishes.
Considerations
Printed colors may appear different: Printed colors may appear different on a colored sleeve than they do on a white background. The base color can influence the appearance of the printed artwork. For example, light-colored text on a dark sleeve may appear less bright or distinct than it would on a white sleeve. To address this, a suitable printing method, such as silk-screen printing, may be required to achieve sufficient opacity and clarity.
Higher production cost: Color sleeves generally cost more than standard white sleeves because custom material colors require additional pigmentation, preparation, and color-matching work.
What About the Tube Head?
Tube heads are usually supplied in white, but they can be made in a specified color when required. Matching the head color can create a more coordinated appearance across the assembled tube.
This matters mainly for tubes with screw-top caps, where the shoulder and neck are visible when the cap is removed. For flip-top caps, the head area is covered and is not visible during normal use, so matching the head color is not necessary.
Color Matching and Sampling at DGS
At DGS, we work with Pantone color matching to help clients specify their desired colors. Clients can also provide an existing physical sample as a reference for the color they want to achieve.
Before mass production, samples are prepared for client review and approval. This allows the proposed color and overall appearance to be evaluated before proceeding with the full order.
Because the appearance of colors can vary depending on the material, surface finish, and printing process, approving a physical sample is an important step in achieving the intended result.
